The bamboo plants classified as short-medium growing are usually forms of Fargesia. The Fargesia group of bamboo plants are very well behaved clump formers. The bamboo plants in this section will grow between 1m and 4m in height making them ideal for the smaller garden and for creating a nice height of privacy screen.

Spreading bamboo plants with their mass of foliage and character can add a tropical jungle feel to any cold climate garden. Popular spreaders for adding tropical feel include Sasa Palmata Nebulosa for its huge glossy leaves, Sasa Veitchii for its stunning bleached leaves and Shibataea Kumasaca for its dense bushy appearance.

Many, in fact most, bamboo plants are suitable for hedging and screening. Many of the small to medium bamboos are ideal for creating short dense hedges. These are usually the Fargesias which are tight clump formers so plant them close to form a dense hedge. Bamboos such as Indocalamus and Sasa will create screens with large tropcial looking leaves. For taller hedges and screens the Phyllostachys and Psuedosasa plants are the best choice. The bamboo in this section are the most popular for hedging however most will work as a screen.
